TV for the blind

03 Aug 2007 11:24

TV service for blind people led by Sony's Bravia range Although we at mangotango are fun loving folk, we know that there is a time and a place for everything. As such, we are fully aware when things need to get a bit serious.

In light of this fact, forgive us for not overloading you with our usual good-natured humour when we reveal news that Sony has launched a campaign to increase the amount of television products aimed at those who are visually impaired.

Led by the superb Bravia range, the campaign promotes access to Audio Description - a service that provides a running audio commentary for television programmes and is designed to fill in the details which are not revealed through character dialogue.

Andreas Ditter, vice president of Sony Europe, said: "We are all used to seeing and using subtitles on TV, but what many people don't know is that the technology exists to make a similarly useful service available for the 30 million or so visually impaired people we have in Europe."

"I am delighted that all of the new Sony Bravia televisions will give people with a serious sight problem access to Audio Description via Freeview in the UK," added Stephen King, RNIB group director for access and innovation.

"Audio Description is a fantastic service that many blind and partially sighted people value. RNIB welcomes the commitment from Sony to this service and congratulates them on their work in this area," he said.
