TV manufacturers to collaborate on LCD research

18 Sep 2007 15:55

Eco-friendly Televisions? Three of the TV industry's biggest manufacturers, Sony, Sharp and Hitachi, have agreed to work together to advance LCD technology and reduce power consumption of flat panel TVs.

With screens constantly getting larger and displaying higher resolutions - last year Panasonic created the world's first 103 inch consumer-orientated HD LCD TV - energy demands are becoming increasingly urgent.

It is being reported that the companies hope to halve the power consumption of flat screen LCDs by 2011, by implementing a number of new technologies and manufacturing strategies, such as LED backlighting.

Earlier this month, Sharp called for a new energy rating system, similar to those used for other domestic appliances, which would allow consumers to see how energy efficient televisions are.

The company has also expressed its desire to be carbon neutral by 2010 and has stated that it will happily support efforts to have its TVs rated in terms of their effect on the environment, in a similar way to fridges or washing machines.
