TVs getting bigger and bigger for UK consumers

21 Nov 2007 11:13

Bigger is better for many Brits in terms of televisions In the past decade the average size of a TV in a UK household has increased by more than ten inches.

That is according to HDTV Org, which has suggested that the majority of people who own a television have a set which is between 32 and 37 inches - up from 21 inches ten years ago.

It is thought that because flatscreen televisions take up less space than bulky cathode ray tube (CRT) sets and as such more and more people are buying larger sized plasma and LCD tellies.

HDTV Org noted: "Consumers were previously unwilling to break the 32-inch threshold in large numbers because of the massive depth of larger CRT units and their demands on floor space. In comparison, a wall hung flat screen need hardly encroach on living space at all."

Electronics giants such as Sharp and Sony are working on technology to develop 40-inch LCD TVs in anticipation of increased customer demand for bigger sets.

Earlier this year, Sharp predicted that "the average size of an LCD TV in a European home will be 60 inches" by 2015.
