The 'indestructible' console

PlayStation 3: Reliable piece of home entertainment Gamers know that getting a brand new console is one thing, but knowing that it will be a reliable piece of home entertainment is another.

Much is made in certain corners of the press of the longevity of snazzy top-of-the-range machines which is understandable given that some of them have a tendency to go kaput after a couple of years.

Still, it is always good to hear that there are some systems that can be relied upon as you would a faithful pet. Not that you're going to be feeding it treats under the table or anything.

What we mean, lovable mangotangoers, is that it has transpired that the Playstation 3 has come up trumps in a recent stress test.

Maker Sony was interested to see how long a PS3 would last and as such let PS3 Vault put the console through a huge stress test. The test subject was subjected to a series of rather harsh conditions; including being placed in the back of a freezer van and in a sauna - and PS3 Vault found that after all that games could still be played on it!

In fact, it was decided that the only way to destroy the console was to take a very large hammer to it. Indestructible?! Pretty much!

Commenting on the testing, Sony's Dave Karraker wrote on the official PlayStation blog: "They put it in a freezer at zero degrees for up to 108 hours and they put it in a sauna at 120 degrees for up to 64 hours - all the while running games and Blu-ray Disc movies on it. Did it fail? Nope. Like the Energizer Bunny, it kept going and going and going."
