The trouble with HDTV calibration

18 May 2007 11:36

High-Definition televison calibration A high-definition TV is pretty high on the must-have list of many consumers these days, especially when online shopping is so easy.

However, excitedly opening up the box and setting up your brand new telly might not be as easy as you think.

Despite the superb picture quality offered by the latest advances in TV technology, it can be tricky getting the image exactly right because most TVs have default settings which are intended to make them look good in electronics shops, not the home.

As a result, images on your fab new HDTV can look oddly stretched and the contrast appears wrong. But calm down dear, that's where calibration comes in.

According to Associated Press writer Peter Svensson, you can fix this problem by either adjusting the settings yourself using a number of products currently available on the consumer market, or you can call in the professionals (don't get too excited, we don't mean the guys from that 70s police drama).

One such product is the HDTV Calibration Wizard DVD from Monster Cable Products Inc and Imaging Science Foundation, which is a DVD which simply shows how to adjust your TV's settings using your remote control.

However, as the Mr Svensson notes, sometimes it's better to rely on the experts, because "the TV set user interfaces vary quite widely, even in the basic settings. For example, what some sets call 'contrast' is 'picture' on others.
