Toshiba LCD TVs increasingly popular in China

09 Jul 2007 15:00

Toshiba’s LCD Televisions are very popular in China No one can deny the increasing appeal of a gorgeous flat-panel television screen, whether it's because they are great for watching HD content, or just because they look so much nicer than those bulky old-fashioned sets.

As such, it may be of little surprise, but of great interest, to hear how well these TVs are doing in various consumer markets. One such area is China, where it is thought by Toshiba that sales of its LCD TVs will increase by as much as 25 per cent next year.

The Japanese firm believes that this will be driven by strong consumer demand ahead of events such as the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and the Shanghai World Expo in 2010, senior executives told Reuters, leading to sales figures second only to those of the US.

Speaking to the news agency on Sunday (July 8th), Yasuhide Ozo, general manager of Toshiba's television sales planning unit, said: "The LCD TV market in China is growing rapidly, it's now maybe about double what it was last year.

"Last year the market was about four to five million units. This year we expect eight million units, and next year maybe ten million units.

"If ten million is China's market size next year, that might make it the second-largest in the world after the United States."
