UK PS3 sales boosted

17 Oct 2007 17:19

Will the new price tag be enough for the PS3 to start catching up with the Xbox 360 or Wii? PlayStation 3 sales in the UK have jumped up by an impressive 178 per cent, following the introduction of a new model and a price cut.

In preparation for the hectic festive season, Sony brought a new 40GB PS3 model to the market last week, retailing for £299. It also reduced the price of its 60GB bundle with two first party games and an additional controller to £350.

According to computer game news site MCV, this shrewd move by the Japanese electronics powerhouse has resulted in the third best ever week for the PS3 in the UK since its launch in March, seven months ago.

Although it still stands firmly behind the Nintendo Wii in terms of sales, the timely boost also gave the platform the incentive it needed to leapfrog its main rival, the Xbox 360.

Strong hardware sales also led to improved sales of previous software titles, with Resistance: Fall of Man, Heavenly Sword and MotorStorm all re-entering the charts in the top 20.

For those who have put off buying Sony's expensive new piece of kit so far, it could be there has never been a better time to take the plunge.
