Wii leads next-gen console race

17 Sep 2007 09:51

Nintendo's Wii sales are UP! Nintendo's Wii is the best-selling console of the current hardware generation, according to new figures.

Cumulative sales of the often-physically interactive game have overtaken those of the Xbox 360.

Figures published by the Financial Times (FT) showed that nine million Wii consoles have been bought, as opposed to 8.9 million Xbox 360s, despite Microsoft's console being released a year earlier than Nintendo's game.

The FT said: "Sales figures from each console's launch date through the end of July (and the end of August in Japan) were added up, with the Wii just barely edging out the 360: nine million for the Wii, 8.9 million for the 360, and 3.7 million for the PlayStation 3."

It added that its report was based on sales figures from Enterbrain in Japan, NPD Group in the US and GfK of Germany for European sales.

Nintendo has recently offered to replace selected Wii systems and individually sold remotes (or handsets) with a newer version.

Wii was originally developed under the name Revolution.
