Will OLED take the market by storm?

10 Oct 2007 13:00

Could Sony's LCD TVs be taken over by their OLEDs? When Sony Corp releases its brand new 11-inch super-slim HD television in December this year, it will undoubtedly generate a fair old bit of interest from consumers and industry bods alike.

This set uses of OLED technology, which makes it more efficient in terms of power consumption and response speed than its plasma and LCD counterparts. As such, analysts have suggested that in the space of three years it could well be the dominant form of flat-panel telly on the market.

The company's bosses waxed lyrical about the set at a recent press conference in Japan last month and professed how hopeful they are for OLED's future.

Sony executive deputy president Katsumi Ihara said: "I don't think OLED TVs will replace LCD TVs overnight. But I do believe this is a type of technology with very high potential, something that will come after LCD TVs."

However, not everyone is so convinced that these TVs will do the business in terms of dominating the market and that, if they do, it won't be in the near future.

DisplaySearch analyst Hisakazu Torii told Reuters news agency: "It's full of potential as a next-generation flat TV, slim enough for wall mounting and energy saving enough to be eco friendly.

"I don't see OLED TVs making a big dent on the flat TV industry in five years ... but LCD and plasma TVs will eventually become mature products with little profitability like cathode ray tube models today, creating an opportunity for OLED TVs."

All of which is really rather interesting, we think you'll agree!
