Microsoft Xbox 360 update Given that the weather for the forthcoming bank holiday Monday is predicted to be characteristically wet and windy, fans of the Xbox 360 can be forgiven for wanting to spend a cosy day in getting acquainted with the latest update for their beloved console.

The free "spring update" from Microsoft will enable users to natter away with pals on Windows Live Messenger by way of a virtual on-screen keyboard. In the summer a new Xbox 360 Text Input Device will be made available which is essentially a controller with a built-in qwerty keyboard and a headset.

Among the other improvements featured in the Xbox 360 update is a new option in auto downloads which will provide access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox Live Arcade games.

It also includes an extension of the background download functionality. Don't be confused, this just means that owners of the console can set their Xbox 360 so that it turns off automatically after downloads are completed.

Earlier this month Jerry Johnson, product unit manager of Xbox LIVE at Microsoft, commented: "Bringing the largest IM community in the world, Windows Live Messenger, to Xbox 360 makes sense, as Xbox LIVE has really become the largest social network on television.

"For our growing community of six million on Xbox LIVE, using Xbox 360 is a very social, connected experience."
